What PSiRA registration actually costs in 2026/27

Almost everybody we speak to has the wrong number. The one we hear most often is R8 000, and it is not on the current schedule. Here is every PSiRA fee as it stands for 2026/27, what is not refundable, and what you keep paying after you are registered.

Registering a security business

This is the set of fees for a company that renders a security service to somebody else for a fee.

Registration, R9 100The application fee for the business itself. This is the figure people usually get wrong. It is not refundable, so a rejected application costs you the money and the time.
Infrastructure assessment, R2 300Compulsory for a new business. An inspector from Law Enforcement visits your premises to confirm that what is there matches your application. It does not have to be a commercial office. A home address is acceptable.
Manual of information, R300Compulsory, and often missed when people budget.
Annual fees, from R6 500 a yearFor 1 to 50 officers, charged pro rata from your registration date to the following April. It scales with how many officers you employ, so this is a floor and not a ceiling.
Certificate renewal, R440Charged when the certificate is renewed.
Letter of good standing, R50Note this is PSiRA's letter of good standing. It is a different thing from the Compensation Fund letter that tenders usually ask for.

To get registered you are therefore paying PSiRA R11 700, being the R9 100 registration, the R2 300 infrastructure assessment and the R300 manual of information. Then from R6 500 a year after that.

In house registration

An in house security business protects only its own people and property and never sells the service to anybody else. It is considerably cheaper.

Be careful with this one. The saving is real, but the moment you guard somebody else's site for money you are a security business, whichever category you registered under. Registering in house to save R2 600 and then taking outside work is the kind of thing that surfaces at an inspection.

Individual security officers

These are the fees for a person registering in their own name, which is separate from registering a business. You need a grade from a PSiRA accredited training provider before you can register at all.

The three things that catch people out

The R9 100 does not come back. A provisional rejection does not refund you, it restarts you. PSiRA states that most provisional rejections come from mistakes on the suretyship form, where every director must sign, every page must be initialled by all directors and both witnesses, and there may be no deletions anywhere on it.

Every director must be registered first. Section 20(2) of the Act says a security business may only be registered if every director, member or partner is registered as a security service provider in their own name, and PSiRA requires each of them to hold at least a Grade B. If that is not in place, no amount of paperwork will get the business registered, and the fee is already spent.

The fees move every year. PSiRA reviews its administration fees annually and the new schedule takes effect on 1 April. A figure somebody gave you last year, or a number circulating in a WhatsApp group, is exactly how people end up budgeting R8 000 for something that costs R9 100.

You can do all of this yourself and pay PSiRA directly. What our fee buys is that the file goes in right the first time, because the R9 100 behind it is not refundable.

How much does it cost to register a security company with PSiRA in 2026?

On the 2026/27 schedule PSiRA charges R9 100 to register a security business, R2 300 for the infrastructure assessment of a new business, and R300 for the compulsory manual of information. That is R11 700 paid to PSiRA. Annual fees then begin at R6 500 a year for 1 to 50 officers, charged pro rata from your registration date to the following April.

Is PSiRA registration R8 000?

No. R8 000 is a figure that circulates but it is not on the current schedule. PSiRA business registration is R9 100 on the 2026/27 schedule, which took effect on 1 April 2026. Budgeting on R8 000 leaves you about R1 100 short before you have added the infrastructure assessment and the manual of information.

Is the PSiRA registration fee refundable if my application is rejected?

No. The R9 100 registration fee is not refundable. A provisional rejection does not return the money, it restarts the process, which is why the file is worth getting right the first time. PSiRA states that the majority of provisional rejections come from mistakes on the suretyship form.

What does PSiRA charge an individual security officer?

R310 to register as a security service provider on the 2026/27 schedule. A certificate renewal is R75 online, an identity card renewal is R130, a re-issue R160 and an upgrade R150. A name change is R265 and an appeal is R210. You need a grade from an accredited training provider before you can register at all.

What is the difference in cost between a security business and an in house registration?
