Do I need to file a tax return?
Six questions, thirty seconds. SARS does not require everyone to file an ITR12 - but skipping when you should file costs penalties, and skipping when you could claim costs you a refund. Nothing you answer leaves this page.
The official rules, in plain English
SARS says you do not need to submit a return only if all of these are true: your total pay for the year was under R500 000, it all came from one employer for the full year, you had no car or travel allowance or company car benefit, you had no other income like interest, rental or a side business, and PAYE was deducted from every payslip. Miss any one of those and you must file.
And even when you qualify to skip, filing is often worth it: medical aid, retirement annuity top-ups and other deductions only come back to you through a return. Run the refund estimator before you decide.

What happens if I should have filed and did not?
SARS charges monthly administrative penalties for outstanding returns, and they add up until you file. If you have missed years, file them - the penalties stop accruing once you are up to date.
I changed jobs during the year. Do I need to file?
Yes. More than one employer or income source in the tax year means you must file, even if each job alone paid under the threshold.
I was auto-assessed by SARS. Is that the same as filing?
An auto-assessment counts as your return if it is correct and you accept it. Check it against your certificates first - auto-assessments miss deductions SARS does not know about, like out-of-pocket medical costs.
Does interest from my savings count as other income?
Yes, interest is other income for the filing rules. There is an annual exemption before tax is actually payable on local interest, but earning interest is one of the things that can make filing required.
