How to apply for a SASSA grant
Every SASSA application is free, at every step. Nobody may charge you to apply, to appeal or to "speed things up"; anyone who does is stealing from you. Here is the real process for the two grants people ask about most.
The older persons grant (from age 60)
From April 2026 the grant is R2 400 a month for ages 60 to 74 and R2 420 from age 75. It is means tested: SASSA looks at your income and assets against limits that are updated every April, so bring proof of what you earn and own and let them apply the current figures.
- Where: your nearest SASSA office, where staff help you complete the form and give you a stamped receipt, or online through the services portal linked from sassa.gov.za. If you cannot travel, a family member can apply on your behalf with a doctor's letter and a power of attorney
- Bring: your 13 digit ID, proof of marital status, proof of residence, proof of any income and assets, three months of bank statements, and pension or UIF records if you have them. No ID? An affidavit route exists; SASSA will explain it at the office
- Timing: the decision can take up to three months, but an approved grant is paid from the date you applied. That receipt is your proof of the date; keep it safe
- Payment: into your bank account, onto a SASSA card, or via an institution. Dates are staggered at the start of each month, older persons first, and the money waits for you; there is no need to stand in a queue at dawn on payment day
The SRD grant (R370 a month)
The Social Relief of Distress grant currently pays R370 a month to adults with no other income, no UIF and no other grant. It has been extended to run to March 2027.
- Apply online only at srd.sassa.gov.za with your ID number and cellphone number. There is no paper form and no office queue for this grant
- No documents are uploaded. SASSA verifies you every single month against bank, SARS, UIF and other government databases, so a month with income can be declined while the next month is approved again
- Declined? You can appeal on the same website; the appeal goes to an independent tribunal and it is free
- Scam warning: the only real site is srd.sassa.gov.za. WhatsApp messages, Facebook pages and websites offering to apply for a fee, "unlock" your grant or fix your status for money are scams, every time
Other grants, same pattern
The disability grant, care dependency grant, child support grant and foster child grant all follow the older persons pattern: apply free at a SASSA office, bring your ID and the children's birth certificates where relevant, means test applied, decision within about three months, paid from application date. The disability grant additionally needs a SASSA arranged medical assessment; our free disability grant checker walks through the qualifying questions first.
