PSiRA renewal and grade upgrades
Your PSiRA registration belongs to you, not to your employer, and it lapses if nobody renews it. Working on a lapsed registration is unlawful for you and for whoever deployed you. We renew it, or lodge your upgrade when you move up a grade, and send you the new details in writing.
Independent paperwork service. ProperSA is an independent private company, not PSiRA. You can renew your own registration directly with the Authority and pay their R75 yourself. Our fee pays for confirming your status, preparing the renewal and following it through.

Do not assume your employer did it
The registration is in your name and follows you between jobs. Officers lose shifts every month because they assumed the company renewed it, and the company assumed the officer did. An employer checks the register before deploying you, so a lapse is usually discovered by somebody else, at the worst moment.
Renewing on time is also considerably cheaper than being restored after a lapse, and it avoids a gap in your record that a future employer can see.
Moving up a grade
Grades run E, D, C, B and A, with A the highest. Moving from one to the next is an upgrade rather than a renewal, and it happens in two parts. The training comes first, from a PSiRA accredited training provider. We do not offer training and we cannot quote you for it, because what academies charge varies from one to the next and it is worth comparing two or three near you.
Once you hold the certificate, we lodge the upgrade for you. R390 our fee plus PSiRA’s own R150 upgrade fee at cost, so R540 all in. Your new grade, registration number and expiry come back to you in writing.
Grade B is the one worth aiming at. It is what PSiRA requires of every director of a security business, and it is the requirement that stops most people who want to run their own company rather than work for somebody else.
What PSiRA charges
Our R390 is the only part that comes to us. Everything below goes to PSiRA at cost on the 2026/27 schedule, and we show you each one before it is paid.
- Certificate renewal, R75 online. This is the renewal itself.
- Identity card renewal, R130, only if you need a new card as well.
- Card re-issue, R160, if yours was lost or damaged.
- Grade upgrade, R150, if you are moving up a grade. That needs training from a PSiRA accredited provider first, and we do not provide training.

Frequently asked questions
What does it cost to renew my PSiRA registration?
R390 is our fee. PSiRA charges its own certificate renewal fee of R75 online on the 2026/27 schedule, paid at cost, so R465 in total. If you also need a new identity card that is a further R130 to PSiRA, and we will tell you before anything is paid.
What happens if my PSiRA registration lapses?
Working on a lapsed registration is unlawful for you and for the employer who deployed you. Employers check the register before they put anyone on a site, so a lapsed registration usually costs you the shift before it costs you anything else. Renewing is far cheaper and quicker than being restored after a lapse.
How do I know when my registration expires?
Your expiry date is on the register. Do not assume your employer has renewed it for you, because the registration belongs to you personally and follows you between jobs. Confirming your current status, grade and expiry with PSiRA is the first thing we do as part of the renewal.
Does renewing change my grade?
No. A renewal keeps the grade you already hold. Moving up is a separate job called an upgrade, and it needs training from a PSiRA accredited provider first.
What does a grade upgrade cost?
The training is charged by the academy and we cannot quote for it, because prices vary from one accredited provider to the next. Once you hold the certificate, lodging the upgrade with PSiRA is R390 our fee plus PSiRA's own R150 upgrade fee at cost, so R540 in total.
Can you renew a security business certificate as well?
That is a different renewal with a different fee. A business certificate renewal is R440 to PSiRA rather than R75, and the business also carries annual fees starting at R6 500 a year for 1 to 50 officers. Ask us and we will quote it for your situation.
